Associated Press Serbia's JAT Airways to Purchase Jets
Serbia's national carrier JAT Airways will purchase Boeing jets and next year will resume flights to New York and Toronto for the first time in 12 years, the airline's director said Friday.
Aleksandar Milutinovic said JAT was holding final negotiations with Boeing on the purchase of its "latest generation" jets. JAT sources said that under consideration were eight Boeing 737-800s and two 767 extended-range planes which will be leased.
The decision meant that JAT ditched its preliminary deal made in 1998 with Airbus on the purchase of eight A319 jets that were to be delivered by 2005.
"JAT needs Boeing," Milutinovic said, referring to a long history of Boeing planes in JAT's fleet and training and maintaining capacities for the U.S.-built planes by local crews. The current JAT fleet consists of Boeing 737-300s and aging Boeing 727-200s.
A deal with Boeing would mean that JAT will purchase new planes for the first time in more than 15 years.
JAT Airways has been struggling to rebuild its fleet and reclaim a position in the market following international sanctions slapped on Serbia during the 1990s for the republic's role in the Balkan wars. The sanctions included an air embargo.
JAT Airways, formerly known as Yugoslav Airlines, stopped flying to the United States and Canada in 1992 after U.N. sanctions were imposed.
Milutinovic said JAT plans to resume its flights to New York and Toronto in June next year after receiving flight rights from the U.S. flight authorities earlier this week.

Cao;
Citao sam isto ovo iz jednog casopisa:
Despite the dark shadow of JAT's defecit; the airline is in talks with Boeing for its short-haul fleet renwall, it has emerged that JAT is in talks to introduce new regional and long-haul aircraft models to its fleet.
It was recentley visited by representetives of Bombardier and Embraer, and in mid-September one of the prototype Embraer 170s visited the airline's Belgrade base on a destination visit.
Jat is interested in purchasing between four and six aircraft in the 70-seat class for operation on low-density routes to the Mediterranean destinations.
As mentioned earlier; JAT is in talks to lease two Boeing 767-300ERs to fly services from Belgrade to Chicago, New York and Toronto, which previousley was served with the companys DC-10, and more recentley it has been flying in partnership with Uzbekistan Airways on the Tashkent-Belgrade-New York route.

Mozda nisam upravu. S Postovanjem

lijepa vijest za JAT , nakomn embarga 1992 , naredna godina bit ce pozitivna JAT Airways mechanic strike called off Dateline: Tuesday October 26, 2004 JAT Airways mechanics, after a meeting of Capital Investments Minister Velimir Ilic, JAT management and representatives of striking aircraft mechanics, called off a strike Sunday. Upset over pay, the mechanics launched the strike Friday afternoon demanding that management be sacked and calling for "a fairer distribution of wages." The strike crippled Belgrade Airport. Following the walkout, JAT said it now can move on with plans to renew its fleet and restore flights to the US, which the Serbian state-owned flag carrier has not operated since 1992 because of an international embargo imposed on Belgrade for its role in a series of Balkan wars. The carrier is evaluating leasing two 767-200ERs by next year to reopen flights to the US East Coast.--Kurt Hofmann
